This may sound over the top, but in my opinion this book is one of the top 5 most important books for museum professionals so far this century. These essays call into question what is really at the heart of many discussions in the field these days - what is the purpose of a museum if our relationship with the material world is changing? When I first heard about Snapchat, I thought "Why would anyone want to take a photo that just disappears?" But it makes complete sense when you consider the shear volume of files that are slowing down my phone and computer. Likewise with museums and collections. If museums are going to expend the financial, spatial, and environmental cost of housing objects, shouldn't they really strike a chord with visitors? Shouldn't they pull their weight? How many spinning wheels do we need?For museum professionals, the mix of conceptual essays mixed with practical ideas will resonate. I'm an educator, not a curator or a collections person. So including both the rationale AND the nuts and bolts of the problems and solutions helps me to see how important it is for all of us -- across departments -- to question our museum's collections policies (or lack of them).Like any ground-breaking book, I think this one will irritate traditionalists. After all, the authors are comparing some museums to hoarders. (Brilliant!) But it's just this kind of provocation that makes for good discussion and spurs much needed change.P.S. The book cover is amazing. Can there be a graphic novel version of this book?
This small but mighty book is such a breath of fresh air. It opens up the idea of museum collections in new and exciting ways, sharing thoughts and ideas about how museum collections can be or become relevant in a changing world. While it challenges many of the long-held beliefs and practices of the museum field, it also provides models and visions that could be much more accessible to small museums and local historical societies who have until now been under constant pressure to live up to standards and best practices that are not only completely unrealistic but also create barriers to true audience engagement. And these new ideas and frameworks are coming from curators and other collections professionals, not rebellious museum education staff or development directors ;-).In my opinion, this book should be required reading for all museums studies students, executive directors, collections staff, and trustees. If the field can begin to embrace the overall intent of Active Collections, there is so much potential to be more relevant, more equitable and ethical, more engaging, and more sustainable at the same time. It had me cheering at times and tearing up at others- finally some of the visionaries in the field are expressing the direction my thoughts had been taking for a while.
