As the Introduction makes clear, this is a guide written by and for someone who is already familiar with the area. This is what sets it apart from other tourist books or lists: there is something here to surprise and delight even the most seasoned visitor. They tend to be scenic rather than cultural or historic experiences, each described succinctly in a single page with an enticing accompanying photograph. Be aware Miami is heavily favoured over the Keys. Key West, which could have a book of its own in this series, is underrepresented. My only other critique is the geographical randomness of the presentation. Would it have been so hard to arrange the sites by region, to make it easier to plan a trip? Granted, there are maps at the end to help with this. Most importantly, it will inspire you to explore off the beaten track!
As a Central Floridian, Miami is like an entirely different country to me. This guide book gave me all of the information I would ever need to enjoy a trip down south. I'm particularly looking forward to visiting number 92, as I have heard rumblings of the mysterious skunk ape even way up here in Daytona Beach. This book is thorough and insightful. Plus the author, Gordon, is a pretty cool dude, too. He has this weird thing with taking your picture and putting a dot on your face, though, not entirely sure what that's about. Anyways, buy the book - you'll be glad you did!
I've been an Amazon shopper for nearly a decade and I have never before written a review. This book has compelled me to on a fundamental level.Let's start with the photographs. The tasteful exuberance of his images portray Miami in a light that perfectly captures her essence. The photos alone are worthy of a 5 star review.The written word is what puts this book into the stratosphere and immediately bring to mind the phrase "must have". Streisand's words not only convey exactly what you would imagine the hidden jewel's of the south to be, but also he has you laughing along the journey too with helpful anecdotes of his own experience.I could not recommend this book more. A stocking stuffer? Perhaps. An absolute necessity for any smart traveler? Without a doubt.
Amazingly well written with beautiful photographs! I was drawn into the story and background of the author and the area immediately. Having someone who grew up in the area they are writing about is genius and this book doesn't fall short of any expectations. I am now planning on going on about 111 trips just to see the places in the book! Beautifully written, wonderful photos, and an amazing journey are waiting for you with this book. Do yourself a favor and pick it up!
Great book. Only had a day in Key West. Helped me quickly understand the history and culture. Also useful for those must see attractions if you are not certain you will return to the area again. Easy read; good information.
I've lived in Florida my whole life and have taken plenty of trips to Miami and the Keys, so I was surprised by how many of the places in this book I have never heard of; Gordon really knows the area well and provides great personal insight along with excellent photography. I will definitely be checking out plenty of spots from this book next time I make a trip down that way.
This is a WONDERFUL book about South Florida even for someone like me,who has lived here for 20 years.This is a very well written and researched book about South Florida that I read in one long sitting,as I did not want to put the book downThe photos are great as well as the textYou will LOVE this book
This book is crap. I knew I made a terrible purchase when I read that one of the 111 places that I "must not miss" is the I-95 Express Lanes. This author stole my money. I live in South Florida and the express lanes should only be in a tour guide only as a way to get someplace faster, not as an attraction itself.I'm still giving the book a chance, however. I've seen about 15 things on the list, and most of them have been crap. A fruit stand in Homestead with nothing unique about it? A structure on top of a hill that promised a unique view, but from only about 50 feet in the air? Most of the destinations have been major disappointments upon arrival.
