A clear exposition of the strength of the stories of the Creation and the Fall, of their value for the contemporary world. Very insightful. Very helpful. Written by a man who understands the modern world. Written and translated in an understandable way. Not highly technical in roughly 80% of its text. These were originally four homilies, which may contribute to their conversational and lyrical tone. They are quite a contrast to the stern Germanic stereotype which dominates the popular caricature of the author. It is important to understand that, in order to explain opposing viewpoints, sometimes he speaks in the voice of a wrong-headed opinion for quite some time. A couple times I found myself thinking, why is he saying this, and then realizing, oh, he's giving voice to a different viewpoint. Some quotes from the first homily:“These words with which the Holy Scripture begins always have the effect on me of the solemn tolling of a great old bell, which stirs the heart from afar with its beauty and dignity and gives it an inkling of the mystery of eternity.”“Its purpose ultimately would be to say one thing, God created the world. The world is not a chaos of opposed forces; nor is it the dwelling of demonic powers from which human beings must protect themselves. The sun and the moon are not deities that rule over them, and the sky that stretches over their heads is not full of mysterious and adversary divinities. Rather all of this comes from one power, from God's eternal Reason, which became in the Word the power of creation. Thus insofar as human beings realized that the world came from the Word, they ceased to care about the gods and demons. In addition the world was freed so that reason might lift itself up to God and so that human beings might approach this God fearlessly. In this Word they experienced the true enlightenment that reveals to them that there is only one power everywhere and that we are in his hands. This is the living God, and this same power which created the earth and the stars and which bears the whole universe is the very one whom we meet in the Word of Holy Scripture. In this Word we come into contact with the real primordial force of the world and with the power that is above all powers.”“Even today faith in creation is not unreal; even today it is reasonable; even from the perspective of the data of natural sciences it is the “better hypothesis,” offering a fuller and better explanation than any of the other theories. Faith is reasonable. The reasonableness of creation derives from God's Reason, and there is no other really convincing explanation. The reasonableness of the universe provides us with access to God's Reason… Therefore we must not in our own day conceal our faith in creation. We may not conceal it, for only if it is true that the universe comes from freedom, love, and reason, and that these are the real underlying powers, can we trust one another, go forward into the future, and live as human beings. God is the Lord of all things because he is their creator, and only therefore can we pray to him. For this means that freedom and love are not ineffectual ideas but rather that they are sustaining forces of reality.”

Is Genesis relevant? Or is it just another creation myth? The author believes that the Biblical story of creation "does not in fact explain how human persons came to be but rather what they are." This short book of 100 pages is a collection of four homilies by Pope Benedict the XVI. It challenges believing Catholics to go beyond the conventional Catechism approach to the Creation story. The section on original sin ( which the author calls "a certainly misleading and imprecise term") certainly jolted my own understanding of this doctrine. Ratzinger state that Original sin means all the sins of human beings, from the very beginning, are interlinked. He defines sin as a loss or disturbance of relationship. Therefore it is never restricted to the individual. Sin is always an offense that touches others, that alters the world, and damages it. We are all born into a sin-damaged world. Therefore, each person from the very start is damaged in relationships and does not engage in them as he or she ought. The author also invites the reader to consider the consequences of believing that the cosmos is only the result of chance.By implication, what are the consequences of the West's rejection of the Judeo -Christian viewpoint, irregardless of whether it is true or not? Are we not redefining what it means to be a human? There is a lot packed into this 100 page book. It would be a good book club selection as it is packed with many ideas that will provoke discussion.

I have to confess I am a huge fan of Pope Benedict XVI. He has left us a legacy of written work that will last for generations and beyond. This particular book is probably a great place to get started for Benedict neophytes. It is a series of homilies he gave on Genesis and how it and the Old Testament point towards the life, death and resurrection of Christ. Clearly this is a book for Christians. But I would say anyone who wants to understand the Catholic view of the Bible would learn a lot by reading this fine little book. Once you've read this you can find other books of his essays and eventually read his three volume of life of Christ.

Anytime you read something by Ratzinger (Benedict XVI) you will read that part of the Bible differently than you did before. In this case it is the story of creation. He is not afraid to address real arguments and other points of view. Unlike many authors, he takes the time to understand other interpretations, even explaining why one could come to those other conclusions. I think he generally respects their intellectual ability. Then, he explains why he believes his interpretation to be the correct one. He is definitely one of the great theological debaters of our time. The only reason I gave this book a rating of 4, instead of 5, is that it is taken from a group of homilies. Naturally, it was intended to be spoken to an audience, not read. As a result, the language is not up to his usual standards of flow for readability. Sometimes I had to re-read passages to understand what he is trying to say. That is not true of most of his books.

Great book. I love Pope Benedict XVI. He is truly a treasure. He explains in few and essential words how the Book of Genesis tells us what it means to be a human being. We are creations of God and, as his creation, we are made to be in relation to Him and to others. But, of course, the analysis goes further and deeper. If I could give this book 10, 50, 100 stars I would.

A must read! Ratzinger's genius is his brevity of his extensive knowledge and wisdom. He is basically able to complete salvation history from the first three chapters of Genesis by throwing enough rope over to the New Testament to make the connection. While this book is easy to read for a deep topic, I still recommend reading only one chapter a day to allow time to reflect.
