“There’s no GCSE in fingering.”If there was ever a sentence that summed up the humor and wit in this autobiography of Sarah Millican’s, this is it. How To Be Champion (October 5th release date) takes you on the journey of one of the top three UK comedians as she navigated surviving bullies, school, divorce, and how she rediscovered herself with standup and writing.I won’t summarize the book for you, because that would deprive readers of the joy of discovering a writer who is truly relatable to the common woman. She’s not self-deprecating, not in the slightest; instead, she acknowledges what she knows the public can see as her flaws and just tells them to go straight to hell. She talks about everything; issues, both physical and mental health, her rise in comedy, even falling in love again with a fellow comedian. Now full admission: I am a huge fan of Sarah Millican, because she is a no-nonsense sort of woman who is one of few comedians who can hold her own among the big names in comedy and have them rolling in the aisles. I was lucky enough to attend a one night only “Work in Progress” show at the 2017 Montreal Just for Laughs festival to hear some of the material she was working on for her next tour. She walked in, notebook in hand, and had the whole of Mainline Theater rolling through the entire set (all the while checking off which jokes worked and which ones fell flat) *Note to Ms. Millican: None of the jokes fell flat. You smashed it! Sincerely, one of the front row people*Some of the best parts of the books are where she is the most relatable. Of particular note, the “Love Letter to My Knockers”. I think all of us with large tits can relate and have probably written similar odes to our own set of knockers at one time or another. Some absolutely amazing advice about wearing only sexy knickers is something I already followed, and can fully endorse; but the best one was a quote about how long to wait to send an angry text to a soon to be ex/ex. Millican says “An hour is the distance between the heart and head.” What she means is that your heart acts on impulse, and may cause you to rush into saying things hastily, but by waiting an hour you can give your rational side time to catch up and help you to decide whether it is smart to send that nastygram to someone.Of particular note: she discusses quite clearly her sentiments regarding children. I remember from an episode of QI where former host Stephen Fry was saying something about someday she might have kids, and she said quite strongly that she refused to have children. He prodded a little, saying something about how she might change her mind (made me like him a little less, sadly, as he was one of my favorite people of all time), and she stood her ground. She is clear and concise in her reasons in this book, and I was impressed at her honesty and candor. No one should have to explain why they don’t want kids, nor should there be a stigma for wanting to stick to pets and not kids, and she calls people out for giving her crap about it. It was brilliantly written and I applaud her for her words. From one stationery loving, anxiety riddled, shy, full figured person to another, keep putting out books, Sarah Millican. The world needs more books like this. You nailed it. Hope you and some of the other writers from Standard Issue compile a book of essays or something similar. Might be a good way for you guys to fund the online magazine or the podcasts. Rating: 5 out five stars, because I can't rate higher!

i saw sarah millican on graham norton. i had never heard of her. she was brilliant. i bought and read her book out of the blue which is unusual for me. it was heartfelt and funny as expected and a decent diversion.

Sarah is as funny in print as she is onstage, and her tips for being champion are spot on. There are some sad topics, but she handles them with characteristic wit and charm. If you aren’t familiar with her work as a stand-up comic, I urge you to check her out!

I wanted to love this book on principle, but - it just didnt happen. Vomiting and pooping don't interest me that much; not wearing high heels or being thin is run of the mill nowadays, as is the decision to forego parenthood. Sarah goes on and on about these things ad nauseum. Sorry, it just wasn't very funny or interesting.

As an ex-supermarket check-out girl I refuse to do for free what I once got paid $1.10/hour (those were the days) to do. I will feign absolute incompetence now at a self-check-out to get an actual paid, standing around doing nothing employee to help me.I adore Sarah Millican & can relate to so much of what she writes about. You will laugh out loud & you will be moved. Suddenly I'm craving "rescued banana" bread!

I had never heard of Sarah Millican, but the book sounded good and the price was right. Turns out I really enjoyed it and I now think Ms. Milligan is a hoot! Wish I lived in England as I really enjoy her British humor.

If you love Sarah Millican’s comedy, you’ll read this book and hear her voice in her head. If embarrassing childhood stories, self-help books and stand up comedy had a baby, it would be this book. Perfect balance between the funny bits, advice, hard times and cake times.

I really enjoyed this book. It was very funny and felt like I was listening to a friend. Plus I couldn't help but read it in Sarah's voice, which frequently made me smile.
