I lived in Munich for almost a year in the 90s and speak German on an advanced level, but over the years (I am back in the U.S.,now) it's gotten a bit rusty. This book is a valuable tool to freshen up your German if you already have a certain command of the language. Even if you are on an intermediate level, the story will be easy to understand since you have the paragraph in English right above the the German one. No need for a dictionary, no need to look up anything.The story is about the struggles of some anarchist squatters in the early 80s in West Berlin, and it's quite entertaining and poignant at times. I especially like the dialogue since this is how people actually speak. At the end of the book comes an afterword that puts the story in geopolitical perspective. West Berlin was apparently a very weird place at the time. This book is not only a language-learning tool but also a snapshot of the time when Germany was divided. Great read!
Kindle UnlimitedGot this on a freebie day, and while don't read German great, with the dual text helping out here and there got about 2/3 of it, nice way to do a type of language learning; to me it was more of a 4 1/2 story wise but since there aren't half stars and did like the dual language part, 5 is right enough rating.I actually ended up with kindle version of both Learn German with modern Literature: Wild Years in West Berlin - Bilingual Edition, and Wild Years in West Berlin, so Danke für die freien Bücher. {Google translator so better be right with how to say Thanks for the free books.}
The story was interesting, but I don't currently speak German and see no discernable way for me to learn from it. Sorry.
