I don't play the games but I understand geek - the book was a good listen. Be warned that it is not a complete story, but comes to an end at a natural break in the action. While I'll probably enjoy the next book I have several dozen other books in my queue, including other series so it may be a while before I return to this series.

Should a Game Master use his magic dice to banish his four players into the world of their game, simply for not giving the game their undivided attention? How very rude! Really, people that own magical artifacts should be required to complete anger management counseling. Granted that all four guys seemed to want beer more than game play, and they were a little insulting to the guy that they invited to their game. But you'd think that someone that wears a purple cape and calls himself Mordred (yes, really) would be a little more tolerant of the social inadequacies of others. I'm guessing he doesn't get out much.So it is that Tim, Cooper, Dave, and Julian find themselves inhabiting the bodies of their game characters, and minus the beer. They wake in the world of their game, and Camelot it is not. As low level characters with limited skills, they soon realize that perhaps beheading that soldier over a few routine insults had been a bad call. Ready or not, they must now "be" the game. Namaste. And that's just the beginning. There is nothing serious going on here, folks. This book is strictly for fun, and you need not be a fan of role playing games to enjoy it. I've never played, but Robert Bevan does a good job of explaining the game without bogging down the story. I had no trouble following the action and appreciating the humor. This is the first of several stories, but the ending is not unfinished. It's more like a "tune in next week for more adventure" type of deal. One note - this is definitely adult fare, not suitable for the younger set. It's also not for those easily offended by some profanity and a bit of crudeness. These characters are not Boy Scouts. But they are the good guys, and funny. I plan to read more of their stories.

I laughed. I cried. I *howled*. Half a Waffle House stared at me in consternation. (Not kidding about that.)If you are now, or ever have been, the kind of relatively low rent guy or gal who gets together with a bunch of similarly low rent friends and gets hammered and hams it up alternatively over role playing your D&D characters and swapping over the top insults, you, too, will probably laugh, cry, and/or soil yourself reading this book.If all of that sounds more appalling than appealing, then this probably isn't for you. The author's plotting, writing, and character building skills are quite good - more so than you might expect from a book like this. But you will need an appreciation for low humor and the particular mindset of the working class to really understand where they're coming from.I wasn't kidding about the real, over the top laughter though. Or the stares I got in the Waffle House this morning. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm gonna go buy the next book in the series.

Ok, this is to help Mr. Bevan get his xmas wish of 500 reviews before Christmas. He did not pay or bribe me or anything, except write a damn funny book. Now while I enjoy reading the book, I fricken love listening to it, even moreso with my 12 year old son. Yes, the content is a little mature, but so is my son, but I would advise prescreening it if you decide to share it with your child like I did. I would put it up there with Family Guy and American Dad and not quiet South Park.Okay, if you have played RPGs and actually role-played and not just rolled dice for combat then over time your group has evolved and been through some heroic adventures. They have also went through some damn funny and even downright stupid events. Now imagine you wrote that stuff down. Pretty good stuff? I have thought about it for over 20 years. Robert quit thinking about it and actually did it. This book is the origin story, the beginning, a book one (lightbulb!), if you will. I got this book because I wanted to know how everything started after I had gotten one of the "d6" books. The d6 series is a series of books containing multiple stories about these numbnuts. After listening to them, I had to know more of the backstory, especially Dave's arm, And other reference's and characters. Like the silver arrowheads! Omg!!! LolAny gamer will enjoy this. Not just for that niche either, anyone can enjoy, it is really funny and enjoyable.Btw, again the audible version is SO WORTH IT! Jonathan Sleep is amazing and truly brings the characters to life. The distinction and emotion he is able to bring, he truly brings it to life. And he only gets better and better as the books continue. I can not say it enough.$.99 sale for kindle then $1.99 upgrade to audible. Try it just one,you will see.

I came very close to giving up on this book in disgust. The first few chapters are nothing but the main characters mocking their new game-master, using foul language and "yo mama" jokes. Then they get transported into the game world, and mock each other with foul language and "yo mama" jokes. I know the characters are supposed to be adults, but they act like a bunch of pre-teens. On top of that, none of the characters is really developed. You could swap who says and does what, and nothing would really change.Eventually, the book did get better. It started focusing on the story and not the characters (who continue to be immature and unlikable). The end was a surprise, and I admit I laughed.Part of me wants to read the next book. Part of me thinks I would be nuts to do that, given all the problems with this one.
