Review
Karen M. Burns compiles 180 Doodle Quilting Designs: Free-Motion Ideas for Blocks, Borders, and Beyond, which provides a fine survey of free-motion quilt finishing techniques for those who have pieced their quilts and want a range of ideas for traditional and modern designs. Arrows and directions explain how to use continuous-line motifs on a range of quilt patterns and borders, teaching how to practice approaches and view finished results by trading designs on paper first. The result covers a broad range of ideas and the specifics of how to apply and test them before putting machine to quilt. --The Needlecraft Shelf

The number ONE reason why I like this book: many of the designs remind me that free-motion quilting is an 'art' and, thus, the results will always be 'perfect' regardless of how smooth the curves, how straight the lines, or how shapely the feathers! Very creative and fresh ideas for how to quilt our projects with more confidence and having fun in the process.
This is the type of book I do not tend to buy, but I follow Christa's blog and when she reviewed it, I was intrigued and came to Amazon to take a peek. What I saw was really cool and presented in a way that I think I can actually quilt them. So I purchased the book and am so glad I did. One of the best features is that the book shows you how the same design looks and is executed in different shaped blocks: triangles, squares, borders, etc. I am so glad I bought this book and as a complete beginner at free motion quilting, it is just what I need to get started.
I have been experimenting with free-motion stitching for a couple of years. I have primarily used it as a form of free-motion embroidery but have wanted to learn how to use it in my quilting projects as well.I have been both hand and machine quilting for decades but on a casual basis, so I consider myself still an advanced beginner or maybe even intermediate at this point. I needed some guidance for how to start with the free-motion quilting process (which is definitely more structured than free-motion embroidery.) When I saw this quilting tutorial book, I bought it immediately as it seemed to be the answer for my needs. It is all of that and more. The book is filled with lots of embroidery patterns that can be traced or used for inspiration. Each of the patterns gives a short blurb on where or how it can be used. There is also a short tutorial at the beginning of the book which walks you through tracing, free-hand doodling, and finally practicing the patterns on your machine.I currently have a mechanical sewing machine set up with a low tension bobbin for use in free-motion stitching. It's a dream of mine to someday own a long-arm machine as well. I was really happy to read another reviewer's comment that these patterns can be utilized in long arm stitching, too.All in all, the book answers my needs and does it with lots of patterns for me to have fun trying. I'm looking forward to many hours utilizing the information in this book and find it a really valuable tool.
I love this book and highly recommend it! NOTE: I also ordered the sequel, MORE, and love it too! I have been machine quilting for lots of years - over 40 and have made hundreds of quilts - and I am really glad that I bought these books. Despite all my experience, I still struggle with doing my own doodling motifs because I really don't have the innate drawing gene. Stippling is no problem but it was about all I did. So, if you are stuck in a rut, buy these books. There are a few things that I believe sets them apart. 1. start & stop points are very clear. 2. transitions within the designs are obvious. 3. each design is illustrated in a square block, a triangle block and along a border. They are not for abject beginners because there are no basic instructions. The authors expect you to have some background and experience in FMQ. Buy them and get out of that rut!
A book of easy to do patterns ! I am enjoying how easy it is to work the patterns from very inspirational quilters. Highly recommend to the new free motion quilter. Truly a confidence builder for us who fear....the freedom..
This book shows how to use each quilt design in three ways: inside borders, triangles and square blocks. It can so act as a springboard for other ideas, including your own doodle designs.
Some different kinds of free motion quilting. There are tips and ideas galore. If you don't have a quilting book of this kind- this is the one to get. I bought a longarm quilting machine and this book has helped with free motion inspiration.
GREAT resource for quilters looking to get into free-motion quilting!! I have a computerized longarm, so I haven't had to work "off the belts" - but of course, I WANT to - so I needed some ideas and love the instructions given in this book - has been such a help!! I'm so glad I bought it!!
Every page shows in larger than life size what each design would look like on a square, triangle and border. It uses arrows within each design to show you where to start and end. With tips and potential pitfalls. Although most designs are not for beginners, I would recommend this book to everyone! It’s awesome!
