About the Author

Grandmaster Jacob Aagaard won the British Championship at his first and only attempt. He is the only author to have won the Boleslavsky Medal as well as the ACP, Guardian, ECF and ChessCafe Book of the Year awards. First, I have to say that I am a huge Jacob Aagaard fan. His entire Grandmaster Preparation is a wonderful collection of challenging problems. But this book transcends his previous work in that the other books are primarily thinking about chess books. This is a thinking about thinking book. He integrates the work of the Nobel Prize winning author Daniel Kahneman to show how the two types of thinking effect chess players decision making.Chapters 7 and 8 are perhaps my favorite. Chapter Seven is titled "What is Calculation" and chapter Eight is titled "The Calculation Process." Going through these chapter will help the aspiring chess player develop an approach to training that allows them to break calculation down into components. Then you can train on each of these to include looking at the position, selecting candidates, analyzing them and really seeing the end position. As Aagaard point out, so often our calculation errors come when we quickly go down a line 6, 8, or 10 half moves, only to discover that our opponent has a reply at move two that refutes our entire calculation.Integrating this work with the other books in the series will help you get much more out of them.

I knew this would be good and it is but you must already be an advanced player. Not for 1800 and under.

I used the version for IOS on my iPhone Six. You first download the Forward Chess App and then download a title you are interested in from the Forward Chess Library/Store. https://forwardchess.com/Please note that Forward Chess has titles from all of the major chess companies which include Chess Informant, Metropolitan Chess, New In Chess, Quality Chess, and others.The eBook “Thinking Inside the Box” by Jacob Aagaard was nicely formatted on my phone. Hyperlinks made it easy to navigate through the chapters. You can change the style and settings of the imbedded chess board and fonts by simply using the settings menu.The best part of the eBook for me was the built-in chess engine Stockfish. You can get an analysis of suggested moves or your moves by using the engine. This feature was very handy for me because I often wonder what is wrong with an alternative move the author may not have covered. This helps to increase my understanding of the game.You cannot beat the mobility of the Chess App. I can read the eBook while traveling or waiting in a long line, hanging out, etc.Another bonus of using the eBook, is that they are normally 15-20% cheaper than the hard or soft cover copy. As for the actual content of the eBook, Jacob Aagaard has a deserved reputation for writing some of the best books in the industry. Since the untimely demise of Mark Dvortesky, he is considered one of the best, if not the best chess coachs in the world. His books are very, very difficult as to be expected as the books are tailored for Grandmasters. “Thinking Inside the Box”, is from Aagaards’s Grandmaster Preparation series. As an USCF A player I probably have no business trying to read Aagaards’s books but as the author said, if you are willing to work, anyone can benefit from his books. I found this to be true and the Forward Chess App was of tremendous benefit. I hate to admit it, but If I did not have the App, I would have probably added this book to the rest of my pile of chess books I did not read entirely.My favorite chapters in the book were Chess Improvement, Training Methods, and the Cheat Sheet section that summarized all the chapters in the book. I also enjoyed the computer section in the book which increased my understanding of engines and how to use them more efficiently.Buy this book in regular or eBook format and you cannot help but improve.The future is yours…….
